Precision Medicine
Most autoimmune diseases, in particular SLE, present as a mixture of disease phenotypes. Another focus of our group leverages the human biomarker and molecular phenotype variables collected on longitudinal patient samples (biofluids, cellular and nucleic acids), along with detailed clinical data (lab results, physician assessments, medications, patient reported outcomes) to generate individual profiles of a patient’s disease trajectory. We can also use those variables in machine learning analytic approaches to help identify heterogeneity in our patient population. Ultimately this information can be used to select patients most suited for specific clinical trials, but it also helps basic science researchers focus their experiments on those patients who present with specific phenotypes.
